ABOUT ZEITGEIST

Willie Geist has maintained since 1996 that the Internet, like the automobile and the television before it, is a fad. He gets his information from microfiche at the public library and communicates with friends through the good old-fashioned United States Postal Service, thank you very much.

So then why is he blogging? Two words: community service. After an ugly incident at his weekly Sudoku game, Willie was sentenced to speak to young people about anger management. He heard that "young people" looked at the Internet, so the blog became his punishment. It's Willie's way of giving back.

In Zeitgeist, you'll find the kind of expert analysis of news and pop culture that has made Willie one of the most beloved figures in American life today (you can look it up). You'll also get raw, behind-the-scenes footage from MSNBC. You'll even get to talk back to Willie. So give the blog a try and catch the Internet fad before it's gone for good.

Thanks for the advice

Posted: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 1:27 PM by Willie Geist

I asked for some parenting pointers with my tongue slightly in cheek, but I soon found myself with pen and paper writing down your collective how-to guide. I hate to choose just a few from this crop, but here are some responses to your responses.

To Linda from Gillette, Wyoming, thank you for the time you took to give your advice. Dr. Spock would be jealous of your thoroughness. Maybe you should write a book. I’d buy it.

To “Vladimir Putin” of Houston, TX, let me just say what an honor it is to have you as a reader. I had no idea you were from The Lone Star State. Perhaps you and President Bush have more in common than you think. Oh, and don’t worry, I have already filed the necessary papers for a restraining order against Tucker.

Lucie Joy Geist: The All-American Girl

Posted: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 12:54 PM by Willie Geist

You’d think it would be hard to take a person seriously when she’s 18 inches tall, but I’ve learned over the last 96 hours that the shorter a person is, the more seriously you have to take her. I’m not sure that this applies to Dr. Ruth (4 ft, 7 in) or Danny DeVito (listed at 5 feet, but probably closer to 4 ft, 10 in), but it certainly does to babies.

When I called my Dad to tell him that Lucie Joy Geist, my brand new daughter, had been born last Thursday night, I gave him the dimensions: 6 pounds, 6 ounces and 18 inches long. His response was, “18 inches? I have switchblades bigger than that.” I had no idea my Dad carried a switchblade knife (apparently he’s in a 1950s street gang I didn’t know about), but his point was taken nevertheless: this girl is small. It’s apparently my job to make her big.

Donald Trump and Rudy GiulianiLucie was born on Donald Trump’s birthday in a hospital room with views of Yankee Stadium. Now, some (most?) of you would say there are no two symbols that better represent what people dislike about America than Donald Trump and the New York Yankees. CONTINUED >>

You may not be seeing Willie around here for a few days.  He and his wife, Christina, welcomed Lucie Joy Geist into the world on Thursday (video).  And yes, the littlest Geist shares a birthday with the one and only Donald Trump.
