ABOUT ZEITGEIST

Willie Geist has maintained since 1996 that the Internet, like the automobile and the television before it, is a fad. He gets his information from microfiche at the public library and communicates with friends through the good old-fashioned United States Postal Service, thank you very much.

So then why is he blogging? Two words: community service. After an ugly incident at his weekly Sudoku game, Willie was sentenced to speak to young people about anger management. He heard that "young people" looked at the Internet, so the blog became his punishment. It's Willie's way of giving back.

In Zeitgeist, you'll find the kind of expert analysis of news and pop culture that has made Willie one of the most beloved figures in American life today (you can look it up). You'll also get raw, behind-the-scenes footage from MSNBC. You'll even get to talk back to Willie. So give the blog a try and catch the Internet fad before it's gone for good.

Fourth of July spectacular

Posted: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 4:37 PM by Jen Brown

Patriotism is wearing lots of red, white and blue clothing and talking about how much you love the United States during five-minute TV appearances.

How can we know that you're a patriot, if we can't see that you're a patriot? With that in mind, Willie Geist presents this year's "ZeitGeist Patriots."  WATCH VIDEO

Who are your top American patriots?  Post your nominee below.

All those who have honorably served our country and its people, from members of the military to firefighters and cops.

What if I drive a hybrid and have solar panels on my house and make efforts to use less energy and have aspirations to not wean myself off of foreign oil? And what if I encourage other Americans to do the same for the sake of establishing a new kind "Independence" - that is Energy Independence.

Doesn't that make me a patriot?

I love my country and want to see it draw upon it's innovative talents to invent new technologies that can help us achieve energy independence, sustainable cities and towns, and healthy ecosystems. Americans can lead the way for the world. I'd also like to see us FREE ourselves from our entanglement with other oil exporting countries.

Mr. Geist put together a great list but left one important person out: Tony Blair!
All that Revolutionary war nonsense is in the past. He proudly displays the red, white and blue, even if it is arranged differently. He speaks our language: American. So what if he says things like ‘lift’, he knows the important things like ‘iPhone’ and ‘terrorism’. In fact the British fight with us side-by-side, back-to-back and belly-to-belly. They seem to be the only one's left. The war in Iraq will be Bush’s legacy, so too will it be his. After all “We are not going to deal with this problem, with the roots as deep as they are, until we confront these people at every single level” was said by none other than Mr. Blair.
I hope he enjoys his 4th of July. He is a true patriot and should spend his 4th like all true patriots do; on vacation!
george bush
Thomas Paine remains my favorite American Patriot.
Here's a patriotism link which seems so appropriate here.

Obviously, you need to watch the video to understand the context of the question.  So, if ZeitGeist is asking, I'll do like Time magazine and nominate a group of people.... how about Hollyweird?  Who else makes a continual (if shallow, thoughtless, and misguided) attempt to influence the rest of the world on behalf of our great Nation and its ideals?
I believe there was a movie that pointed out that Mel Gibson is not only a patriot but is 'THE' Patriot. I did not see the movie but did see the billboard. Frankly, the very fact that you left him out makes me wonder if you would know a patriot if one crept up from behind and hit you with the business end of an eagle-topped flagpole. For cryin' out loud, Willie; it was a feature length film.
Ron Paul - Lou Dobbs  - Tom Tancredo - Sibel Edmonds
Thank you Willie for telling us who the Patriots are! After listein to Rush, Bill, Ann, Mike or Sean I am not sure who is one, and then we have Bill M, Adriane, and Keith telling us the same.  You sir are the true Patriot of guidance. May Fox noise bless you.
I have American flag magnet (made in China) on my car.  That shows my patriotism.
I think Keith Oberman will rank up there with the best of TV journalists. He woke me up and I don't feel so lonely anymore.
Keith Olbermann, Jack Cafferty, Our troops (who are being wasted in a war we should never have been involved in), Lou Dobbs, George Bush Sr., and Warren Buffett.
Quoted from above:
"Philip K. Dick (Sent Tuesday, July 03, 2007 9:35 PM)"

http://www.philipkdick.com/aa_biography.html

lists the science fiction author Philip K. Dick as having died in 1982.

Without attacking the comment above, one can say that it is either remarkably prescient or proof of communication from beyond the grave.
I nominate the many Southern California phonies who (1) fly American flags on their Japanese luxury cars and (2) hire illegal Mexican immigrants to clean their houses and maintain their yards. These guys invariably claim to be "true" patriots.
Tom Brady, Tedy Bruschi, Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth. Lol.
Only Republicans are patriots.  Democrats are something quite different.
Al Gore, for fighting for a critically important cause (when he could just as easily "retire" and focus ONLY on making money and living an easy life).
Bill Clinton
In order:
George Washington
Sam Adams
Ben Franklin
Bill Clinton
I'm not willing to give up my American passport.  Therefore, I'm a patriot.
"putting the fun back in funerals."  Kudos for that one, Willie.
Ben Franklin
A Marine (this means you, Marine)
A guy with a gun.
A family on a farm.
Anyone afraid of the Bush administrations dismantling of our Constitution and economy and Congress's inexcusable inaction on the matter.
Cindy Sheehan.
Howard Zinn, Noam Chompsky and Scott Ritter...they were some of the first ones who told us that Powell, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld were Liars and invading Iraq illegally.
Ron Paul     Bill Hicks     Lou Dobbs
Mika Brzezinski!
just because she refused to report on that Paris Hilton crap!
Keith Olbermann, because, without question he has demonstrated the courage to tell the truth, speak out against a corrupt administration and make me feel truly proud to be an American.
Willie,
I love your satire. I believe your show should offer a Hillary Clinton Pant Suit award to the worst political figures in Washington D.C. Tucker would just love it. Keep up the good work Willie.
Keith Olberman. For one hour each weekday, I have hope for the true patriots in America. Thank you so much, Keith
I honestly cannot say that I am any more. After over 3 decades of abuse by so-called fellow Americans because I am a Veteran, I think that anyone who backs this country either has their own agenda,(often political),or a death wish. Rest assured, having been shown what a horrible crime it is,I will NEVER do it again!
Definition of a true Patriot:  You still get a lump in your throat when they play the National Anthem at ball games;  At parades, you teach your children that silent respect when the flag marches by; You are inspired by the words of National unity, from warriors like Thomas Jefferson, Henry David Thoreau, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Ronald Reagen...men who believed in the greatness of America, without the pettiness of party retoric.  A true Patriot questions their government at every turn, ensuring that the history our fore fathers believed in continues for our legacy; A Patriot loves America, for all her faults, her strengths, her ugliness, her beauty; You appreciate that, regardless of where we came from, what foreign land our ancestors sprung from, we're here NOW, in the arms of Freedom. A Patriot is the soldier who says "Send me--I'll go"  Into the belly of the beast, selfless, one giving all for the good of the whole.  Is this you?  Do you still get goose bumps when you see your Stars and Stripes in the sun, knowing how many people sacrificed everything to keep it flying?  If you answered yes to any of these, YOU are a Patriot.....
George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan...and yes, the Patriot spoken of above played by Mel Gibson - what was his 'real,' name?
All of our soldiers who are chancing losing their lives to fight for American freedom - Thank You to ALL of you - We love you!
Ralph Nader,  Lou Dobbs, Michael Moore, Keith Olbermann, my dad, my husband who tries to stop the blood letting of the middle class by working and supporting his union, me, Al Gore.  Does that make me a liberal or just informed?
Who are the real patriots?  Sen. Patrick Leahy, Rep. John Conyers, Al Gore, Don Imus, Rosie O'Donnell, Oprah, Barbara Streisand, John Edwards, and The Quasi-Liberals who know the "Whole Truth".
PATRIOTS:
George Bush Sr., not Jr.
Jimmy Carter, ex.,President
Norman Swartzcoff, Lead General in Desert Storm
ANYONE who voted in the last presidential election, preference does not matter
Noam Chomsky.
---one of the greatest Americans alive...tw
bill stephenson wears the american flag on his shirt collar every day. read his poem: HAIL TO OLD GLORY at poetry.com on the internet.william stephenson.
Theodore Roosevelt.  The only politician I would ever truly admire if he were alive today.  Fearless, honest, lover of the great outdoors and true American leader and hero.
Ron Paul
Remember the bumper sticker..."America, love it or leave it"....one worlders are certainly not patriots of this country anyway.
